Many of us have questioned whether obtaining certifications is truly necessary in the field of software engineering. Based on our experience, some companies do require certifications when hiring software engineers or granting access to certain tools and platforms. We have also observed that experience tends to matter most in this field. The ability to learn and the skills you develop often outweigh the importance of certifications. In many cases, a university degree is not a strict requirement to enter the software engineering profession.
It also seems that having relevant certifications can increase the chances of being hired for those looking to enter the field, and may even support career advancement or promotion for those already working in the industry.
With this in mind, we would like to hear your thoughts:
Has a certification helped you in any way to secure a job or earn a promotion?
Here’s my take on this matter
I don’t currently hold any Tech certifications, but from what I’ve seen in the industry—especially in web development—not all positions require a certificate or even a degree. In many cases, having a strong portfolio with a few solid, well-built projects that demonstrate your skills and understanding can be just as powerful, if not more so, when applying for jobs. It’s often more about what you know and can do than the piece of paper that says you’ve studied it.
That said, once you’re in a job, some companies may require certifications to work with certain tools, platforms, or software—particularly for compliance or vendor-specific reasons.
On the other hand, if you’re looking to enter more regulated or specialized areas like cybersecurity, networking, cloud engineering, or software testing, then certifications often become a more essential part of landing your first role. In those fields, employers usually look for a combination of certifications and hands-on experience to feel confident that you meet the technical and security requirements of the role.
